Perhaps you remember the unbelievable cat-friendly house from Japan that I posted previously. Well, here is another one that may be even more incredible. The Cats’ House designed by Japanese architecture firm Fauna +DeSIGN was built for the owners 16 cats (and 5 canines). It has every kind of climbing and perching structure a feline family could ever dream of, all integrated beautifully into a modern interior.
There appears to be great attention to detail throughout the house. Notice the rounded corners on the climbing shelves. Much safer for cats than sharp pointed corners.
There are even access areas for humans to make it easier to clean the upper perching areas.
Lots of natural light gives the space a wonderful open feel. This handsome silver tabby is certainly enjoying himself!
Catwalks and shelves galore along with secret tunnels and passageways just for cats.
This giant floor-to-ceiling sisal-wrapped scratching and climbing post has got to by my favorite feature.
There are many more photos at www.catshouse.jp as well as some videos of the cats enjoying their home.
Thank goodness that Goma’s mom Sachie understands Japanese, because she keeps finding these incredible things! Thanks, Sachie!
With such attention to detail, I’m wondering — how did they handle the 15 cat boxes?!
Beautiful! The more details the better, especially about litter box placement and practicalities like cleaning and catching the cats when it’s time for grooming or the vet.
YEAH!! I’m with Violet! How DID they deal with ALLLLLL those cat boxes????
It looks like a wonderful house for cats…does it house people too?
Wow! My next house will be designed around my four furry friends.
I saw the previous house and this one has even more elevated “highways” for the kitties to traverse! Japan always seems to have the coolest homes 🙂
Amazing design! Its cat friendly and human friendly too!
Tha t is so fantastic. I’m sorry to be logical but they must have someone come in to clean! Still, it’s great.
I would like to know how they attached the shelves to the walls. I can not make out any supports. I am aware of the ability to put posts into a stud to pin the shelves to walls but accurate placing of the posts is tricky. Some patching of miss drilled holes must be included I guess. If you happen to figure it out please let me know.
That’s always tricky. The best tip I’ve used is photocopying the back of the shelf or whatever you want to hang. You then have a template you can tape on the wall, and drill exactly where the holes are.
I’ve also put a long piece of painter’s tape on the back of the shelf so it covers all the holes, drawn on the tape where the holes are, and then transferred the tape to the wall and drilled where I had marked, but photocopying works better – I’m not always good at drawing exactly how big the holes are on the other side of the tape.
Finally, I can’t imagine doing a project as big as this one, but I imagine it would require careful planning beforehand, and marking off exactly where you can and cannot drill. It’s always the worst to drill one hole, only the find out there’s something electrical in the wall where the second hole needs to go.
