Cats living in and around Austin, Texas have their very own resource for building some awesome cat climbing structures! David Murphy, The Cat Carpenter, designs and builds cat trees and custom cat climbing shelves that would make any cat feel like they are in heaven.
David’s cat trees aren’t flimsy little perches that need to be replaced every year or two. His cat trees are built to last. They are constructed from solid wood and cabinet-grade plywood and finished with heavy duty urethane for durability. Heavy and strong, these trees can’t be shipped, so if you’re in the Austin area you’re in luck! David will deliver one directly to you.
David also makes cat climbing shelves and tunnels to help cats take advantage of the vertical space in a room. Each shelf is custom designed, which means David will come to your home for a free design consultation. He’ll create a shelf or group of shelves just for your space and your cats.
So where did David get his expertise in creating durable, easy to clean cat furniture that cats love? He’s also the Director of Sanctuary Operations at Shadow Cats Rescue in Round Rock, TX where he has spent years perfecting the design of his cat trees and climbing shelves and testing them with the cats at the rescue. What a great laboratory and fabulous feline test subjects!
Please visit www.TheCatCarpenter.com for more information about David’s products and services, and if you live in the Austin area, please give him a call and have him transform your home into a cat climbing paradise!
Beautiful! And all the kitties look so happy!
MEOW! Wish we lived in Texas! We would love to be able to have some of these pawsome cat trees and climbing shelves 🙂
David does great work and the towers are sturdy for the kitties!
Love ’em!!!! Especially those kitty-kutouts!
What a great story and beautiful work.
I love the cat trees, and the shelves are just amazing. What a talent. Too bad they’re only available in the Austin area.
They are beautiful, practical and so flexible. What fun for the cats. Wish I lived close to Austin.
That’s my Styvbjörn on the first picture,. He’s been dead for 3 years, and he was not polydactic, but me and my friends who knew him so well ,can bet our asses on, that the cat on that picture are our beloved and very missed Styvbjörn from Stockholm Sweden.
These are great. I have a vacation lodging facility just for cats. My husband built smaller versions of these for our cat’s playroom here. Same idea – sturdy wood, multi-levels and varnished for easy cleaning.
Those cheap carpeted cat trees are no good for heavy duty use like ours get, plus they are not sanitary or easy to keep clean.
Keep up the good work! We loved the pictures at the sanctuary.
Just love, love your work, grat detail in all your work I can tell you love Blossom a bunch!! Cindy
But but… I’m not in the Austin area but my name is Texas, does that count?
They are gorgeous!

Wow, my cats will wish we lived in Texas! David does amazing work, thanks for sharing.
really love the shelves with the kitty cut outs!
As a longtime admirer of ShadowCats, this post makes me SMILE bigtime. What gorgeous top-quality furniture for so many deserving cats! Ah, to live in Austin…*sigh*
Awesome! Makes us want to move to Austin TX!
Very cute and sturdy. The cats look like they love them. I have one question though–where are the cradles. My cats all love cradles on their cat trees.
They do look well made, attactive, and something cats would love. I have a multi-level cat “castle” that we purchased at Petco years ago. Other than needed some carpeting replace, it is still in top notch shape. I have an old photo of it with 4 cats and 1 kid (my grandson when he was about a year and a half) happily climbing on it.
The neatest “cat tree” I ever saw was at my Kirby dealers in Great Falls, MT. He and his wife would cut down suitable tress and mount them in a stand. Perfect for climbing and for scratching. I don’t believe he sold them, but he had several in his store.
I find sometimes cat furniture which has been designed to look good isn’t all that practical when it comes to keeping it clean. You can tell David’s had years of cat care experience, as he’s come up with a range of furniture with maximum cat-appeal, which takes mundane practicalities like good hygiene into account too. Top work, David! And lucky Shadow Cats!
Massively awesome!
I really wish I lived near you. I need something simular for a very active cat. By the looks of your trees you use 4×4’s and plywood platforms. Though I’m not sure how you keep the carpet in place it looks like something I think I could build here in Maine. I think I’ll give it a try.
I love the pics of all your work and of course the wonderful kitties too.
Thanks.
