This litter box isn’t as stylish as others that we feature on Hauspanther, but the pure functionality has me giddy! This is the Feline Pine Self-cleaning Litter Box, and it is fabulous! I’ve been wanting to try this out for a while now, so the company sent me one to test, and I’m hooked. I’ve used pine pellet cat litter in the past, but I was always frustrated because as the pellets breakdown into sawdust, the whole box becomes a mess and the sawdust tracks all over the place, then you wind up throwing out good pellets when you dump the whole thing. Ugh!
The Feline Pine Self-cleaning Litter Box takes care of all those issues. It’s a 2-part box, as you can see above. The top compartment has a slotted bottom, allowing the sawdust to fall into the bottom tray. You simply scoop solids from the top, add a few more pellets, and dump the sawdust out of the lower tray as needed. Brilliant!
This litter box can be used with Feline Pine pellets or any other pine pellet cat litter, or wood stove pellets work great, too.

Another useful alternative that I’m sure will be welcomed by those who use this type of litter!
I love the one that you tip to one side and then pull the drawer out and empty it into the garbage. No having to scoop the litter or empty the litter box into a bag and make a mess all over the floor. Neat clean and simple!. Omega Paw roll n clean
How is cleaning this box? Because it has two pieces, it seems like it might be double the work.
I love Feline Pine litter AND litter box. There is absolutely no litter box smell!
I’ve been using this litterbox for a few months now and it ROCKS! it also makes scooping litter more fun cause you can pretend you are in the California gold rush. 😉
I use this since 1,5 years now and it’s really good. I have less costs and my two cats used it right from the beginning. One of the big advantages of this kind of cat toilet is that my appartement is finally litter-free!
How does this work with MULTIPLE (7) cats??? We use 3-4 boxes w/good quality scoop litter and have to clean daily – plus empty and wash at least every 10 days. Lots of work as we are old – and the scoop stuff is very heavy
I will do my best to answer your question. (We have been using it for our 2 cats, so I can speak only from my experience and guess how you will apply to your situation.)
You will still want to use the same number of boxes. You will still clean the poo out daily. You will NOT have to scoop ‘urine balls’ You WILL INSTEAD stir a bit and shake (back and forth on the ground, you don’t have to pick it up) the ‘sawdust’ goes down to the lower level. You will need to empty the sawdust from the lower level (for my 2 cats, it’s once every 6 or so days) The website has a video you can watch. Since buying the box, the scoop and the litter can set you backa few pennies, maybe just try replacing one at a time and see how it goes? I think you will LOVE how light weight and easy it is! (and not so dusty!)
Good luck!
The trick with this terrific box is to use a plastic liner on the bottom portion of it to catch the sawdust. Then you just change the liner quite mess-free once a week. I also put some newspaper on the bottom of the box, underneath the liner but this isn’t necessary. I’ve been using it for years for our multiple cat household, and putting the boxes in the big plastic trays you put underneath washing machines (available at Home Depot, etc.). It has made life so much easier!
I bought a different brands version of this and was dissappointed at how many pellets still fell through.. this is the litter I most want to use and if this works I will be sold..not if I could just get my cats who like clumping clay sold!
Considering we have not only five huge plastic drifts in our oceans, but an island of plastic as well, using more plastic to line a litter box is not a good alternative.
Does this box have a top or will one bought at a retail store fit it?
I have 2 of these, and it works really well for pine pellet litter. With my crew I usually empty the bottom every 3-4 days, but I shake them down 1-2 times a day. I flush the poop down the toilet. I do have other litter boxes too since 2 would not be enough for our 12 kitties.
I use this great system, and I line the bottom box just to make it easier. When it’s time to clean, I just lift the liner out and put another one in. The liner is on the bottom, so it doesn’t disturb the cat’s activity.
A couple notes: bad to flush kitty waste for toxoplasmosis in the oceans reasons.
As for a covered box, we bought two boxes- a standard covered box and one other tray that fit within the covered one with some space between the two. We drilled holes just smaller than the pellets in the top box, and voila – home made feline pine box

I will say that there is no dust (which was my least favorite part of clay litter) no perfume (so poo still can have some poo smell) and no amonia cat urine smell! You can use a scoop with every other tine cut out to make it so that the poo stays in the scoop and the pellets fall back through. We shake and shimmy and sift the sawdust through to the bottom and every couple of days we empty the bottom. We always leave a couple fresh pellets in there after emptying to avoid any sticking and have not needed to use a liner of any sort. It is cheaper, better for the environment, smells like fresh pine (reminds me of a fresh horse stall which I have positive associations with).
Very pleased- remember to buy the original formula- not the clumping one! 🙂 We haven’t had much tracking problems either- I use a litter mat and an old shag bathmat to catch any sawdust off paws.
I have used the box with pellets for years and I really like ’em. I have 2 adult cats and foster kittens so I have anywhere from 1 to 3 boxes out at any time. Since it’s pine, it’s light – unless you leave it to fill up with urine.
To start, put a scoop of pellets at the bottom to help absorb the urine that flows through.
Remove solids and then shake and stir each day to help the pine dust go through the mesh – this is important as it helps to keep saw dust tracking and smell to a minimum – shake & stir.
Once the bottom fills up (I do it once a week with 2 cats – more often when I have boarders) Lift the top and empty the pine dust in a corner of your garden that you’ve given over to weeds and natural cover – boy does it make those weeds grow. 🙂
I got 3 of the Feline Pine Litter Boxes… allhough they are smaller, lucky for me they fit perfectly inside my old ones.. so I have a box in a box, and so the original lids still fit…The cats don’t notice any difference, and I am also ‘giddy’ at the time this saves me, and the litter it will save by not having to throw out good litter with bad. Thanks for reviewing this box Kate! I am a pellet fan, and a Feline Pine Litter box fan…. PS .. I actually use Blue pellets because I prefer the walnut smell to the pine, the boxes work fine for that brand as well.
Ooo! Good to know! I’ll have to try it with the Blue pellets. Thanks!
After reading the reviews I thought I’d give it a try, I was just SICK and tired of the dust/perfume (daughter has asthma) and grit (new vinyl floors) of the clumping litter (and it’s HEAVY!)
I’m a skeptical person…I went ahead a purchased it, had it for just over 2 weeks now and can say WE WILL NEVER GO BACK!
I initially tossed a few handfuls of the pellets on top of the scoop litter (in their old box) so as not to freak them out for the switch (I also had an open container in their litter area (under our kitchen sink) so they could get used to the smell (very mild ‘wood’ smell.) After a day or so I went ahead and made the switch. For the first 2 weeks I placed their old lid/cover on top of the new box (it didn’t really fit/latch) I had just removed the cover (it was get knocked all wonky) and they seem to be fine – more importantly – I don’t seem to have a mess! The pellets are bigger/heavier then the scoopable grit and doesn’t seem to fly about/scatter. The few pellets that have found their way out of the box are easy to toss back in.
This has solved ALL of my issues:1. no more ‘grit’ damaging my floors. 2. no more dust irritating my daughter (or the cats!) 3. Much easier to clean! 4. better for the environment 5. lighter weight 6. cheaper! (I’m going to get equine pine next time I need to buy as it’s even better priced.)
If people sound ‘over the moon’ for this product –there is a reason! LOVE IT!
I love Feline Pine because it is the one kitty litter I found that lists all the ingredients. It is only pine, no additives. This is important because I compost it in my yard. I bury the solids and then toss the litter under plants. The problem was that the used litter is lightweight and was tracking all over the house. This litter box eliminated 90% percent of the tracking. I am thrilled.
I buy the pine they use for wood fired furnaces. I purchase it at a farm store and it costs approximately $5 for a 40 lb. bag. Works great. The only problem I have is the boxes are low and my cats did better with the larger tote size boxes. If this company would manufacture this sort of box, I’d be happy to replace the boxes they currently sell.
This looks like a great product and I’d love to try it but….$21.99 plus $12 shipping!!! That sounds outragous.
I really wish they would have local distributors. I could justify paying $21.99, and I understand why the shipping is high but would rather buy locally.
Any idea if they plan on mass marketing these litterboxes? I have 8 cats and two fosters so would like to switch totally to pine but it right now it is cost prohibative.
I just bought one and am very excited that my cats are using it. However, my male cat doesn’t squat to pee so he effectively pees over the side of the box. Anyone have ideas about what to do?
A&Hammer Feline Pine has additives that immediately caused all three of our cats respiratory/ runny eyes and sneezing and wheezing THAT ALL THREE NEVER HAD! WE SWITCHED TO A COMPLETELY SIMPLE PINE brand that even smells fresher and ACTUALLY WORKS BETTER AT DEHYDRATING the feces/ urine !!! I note too That MANY CATS DO CANNOT STAND TO be on PELLETS or Pearls I DONT BLAME THEM!! So granular we have switched to of the simple Pine type litter AND CAN easily make sifting boxes ourselves with heavy duty shears and most plastic storage boxes.. HIGH SIDES that way TOO!! ++!! So hey anybody can try this just do opposite of holes instead of pellets staying on top use sortv like slits that the granules that are good go down when lift up top layer pan thus all your pee clumps stay and feces in one top pan to tilt into a lined garbage bucket !! PINE that is granular or almost sawdust to be more exact DOES CLUMP though soft clumps These are firmer THAN FELINE PINE that ADDED BAKING SODA AND AN AGRICULTURAL PETROLEUM BASED MINERAL OIL THAT ONLY IRRITATES BOTH DO NOTHING FOR EVEN ODOR The Pine Controls Odor ITS OWN SELF until TRULY SATURATED AND CANNOT DRY Out more than A FEW TIMES BUT WOULD BE A SMALL CLUMP THEN and YOU’D Have thrown it out by time it wouldv matter in the least !!!! I wish simple granule pine was Readily AVAILABLE in physical stores for the Emergency and Trial / as shipping / ordering IS SUCH A PAIN AND WASTE OF TIME and RIP OFF !! Walmart had pellet Feline FRESH BUT SHOULD GET FELINE FRESH GRANULAR /CLUMPING soft for paws and scoopable REALLY BETTER AT DRYING THAN Arm&Hammer !that smells turpentine-like No Wonder my cats got Soo SICK!!! Feline Fresh Scoopable even Cleans up EASY!!! You just need some fans helping drying out if live in a humid or use outdoor setting ! About Agricultural mineral oil> it is petroleum based yup and it is allowed because its an external not eaten except if slaughter upon a specific timing , this oil additive for material say bedding or even grains and most likely topically is to fight parasites > well?, bovine mostly feed lots / barns the like BUT It IS NOT SPECIFICALLY Worked out how it should be used THANKS TO INDUSTRY wanting it wide spread So Government DID NOT NOW FOR MANY YEARS fine tune HOW AND EVEN HOW MUCH This Turpentine-like stuff gets actually in reality INTO /ONTO ANY and EVERYTHING eventually !! SO You will see it on BIG NAME BRAND and CHEAPY PRODUCTS right on the store shelf and even Proudly they will say so nowadays AS THEY AREN’T SHY to shove BAD things dis-regarading Health and SAFETY as in past have set up precedence so blatantly !!! BEWARE! SIMPLE NATURAL IS FAR EASIER ON YOU AND POSSIBLE TO GET!!
I also wonder if our main coon would have had Stomata/ all teeth but fangs are out now/ would she have had all those teeth rott from inside out /gums up into teeth if had not been ingesting CLAYS by licking off clay litter !!?? WHY NOT , cats digestion systems / tracts are shorter than other mammals and they do Externally from hair tips take in like anything topically put on them / they absorb through their fur.. is why vets push and have developed flea drops to begin with.. We don’t use any flea products / WE DONT HAVE ANY!! and our long hair cats are half the day in a screen in porch or out on an open one and in around a fountain even catching lizzards.. they HAVE NO FLEAS in FIVE YEARS!!! ONLY Corn litter a bad trial of which gave them / us all NASTY INFESTATION! No wonder Pine is better and the simpler made WITHOUT THAT A&H turpentine smelling baking soda slime not needed. We feed ours close as can to raw but a canned food pate soft for the toothless one lol but its least additives possible and can get on shelf of only one of the big pet name stores it has a tablecloth motif on label but again keep things simple and won’t have issues.. also been using puppy pads as litter mats works great and even a mesh such as a throw rug latex mesh that rugs stay in place you put under them with/ cheap ones seem really easy to catch litter and wipe even .. We ended up not only needing xrays better BETTER on her toothroots bc first vet didn’t take out Roots !!! $$$$ wasted !!!! should sue!! Cold laser therapy also helped that the Good 2nd vet had used before and after Just a time or two EVEN HELPED not many needed and wasn’t much$ ! Traditional vets are just kinda crummy some of them too into kaCHING $ is a warning and maybe we should euthanize some times as suffering hiding cats DO NOT DESERVE PAIN and punishment if Only WE Understood how bad it is They are treated !! A simpler Pine granule/near saw dust REALLY HELPED WITH NO ADDITIVES it clumps soft but NOT Crumbly as the feline pine a&h brand did, so go find a better pine simply made !! Hopefully it’l get mainstay into physical stores so we can alll breathe easily and LIVE clean HAPPY LIVES!!
I’d love to use this, instead of my Breeze box and Breeze pellets, since I use pine pellets with my little pug’s pan. I simply lift the 4 corners of a liner in her dog-sized, larger pan to dispose of her soiled litter easily. (Oh, how I wish there was a dog-sized version of this one!)
But the cat’s pan must have high sides or all the litter — any kind of litter — winds up outside of the box and on my floor.
Are optional sides available for this pan, like both the standard and XL sizes of the Breeze pans have?
Thanks, Linda
I feel like someone doesn’t know what “self-cleaning” means.
