If you’ve been following along on the Hauspanther Facebook page, you may have seen that I was at the Global Pet Expo last week, searching for the latest and greatest pet products to share with you. I found a few new things, but by far this is the product that I’m most impressed by.
Introducing the CritterZone Air Purifier, a new player in the fight against pet odors. My life pretty much revolves around stain and odor elimination, so I’m always trying new things to help with the problem. Sprays, powders, liquids, filters, fresheners — you name it. Each one has a specific use, but a good (and affordable) system for keeping the whole house odor free had been eluding me.
While at the pet expo, I visited the CritterZone booth and chatted with Bill Converse, the president and inventor of CritterZone. Of course I was skeptical, having seen demonstrations of so many products over the years. He explained the technology to me, which seems to be unlike anything on the market. Bill has 30 years of experience designing air purifiers — talk about your world revolving around odor elimination!
How it actually works is quite complicated, you can read more about it here, but I was intrigued so they gave me a couple of units to take home and test and I’m completely blown away! This tiny unit almost immediately eliminates all odors in up to 800 square feet. Just plug it in, turn it on, and you’re done. I can’t tell you exactly how it works, but I can tell you that there is nothing to replace, nothing to refill, and nothing to clean. Ever! It’s not a filter, it’s not a spray, it’s not an ionizer (like the other ionizers on the market). It uses some kind of low voltage electrical charge to literally destroy odor molecules, not just those that pass through the unit, but throughout the entire room. And it is such low voltage, that you can leave it on 24/7 because it costs about $.01 per day to operate.
Sounds too good to be true? I thought so, too, but I’m convinced, this is the greatest invention EVER! Bill explained to me that he had worked on similar air purifiers that sold for hundreds of dollars for use in commercial environments. Apparently, nothing like this has been available on a small scale for consumer use before. There are two versions of CritterZone, one that plugs directly into the wall outlet, and a second version that has an adapter cord so you can plug it in and place it on any surface. You can also get a car adapter so you can take it with you to clean the air in your car! The unit measures 4.5″ tall by 2.75″ wide by 1.75″ deep. If you get the wall plug in unit, the plug protrudes in the back of the unit 1 inch. On the corded unit, the cord protrudes less than .5 inch.
So how much is it? The CritterZone sells for $89.95, which is still more of an investment than a $7 bottle of spray, but remember, you don’t have to replace any filters or refill anything, or even clean it. And the company offers a 30-day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied, but I pretty much guarantee that you will be thrilled!

This does sound great, especially for multiple pets living in a small area. But I’m sure it goes without saying that it shouldn’t be a substitute for thorough cleaning. I SO hope people are smarter than that. I know I had lingering odors from my problem child even after he got back on track and cleaned multiple times before successfully getting rid of the odors.
Hi,
Sounds great – how noisy is it?
Due to it’s unique design and technology – it is virtually silent. No problem using CritterZone in a bedroom – it will not disturb your sleep!
It does have a *very* low hum similar to that of a white noise machine… but quieter. For the benefits it gives, the quiet hum is SO insignificant! This product is GREAT!
I am wondering what the EMF factor of this unit is, especially since it works on the whole room and not just the air that passes through it.
I would like something like this though. I recently began fostering kittens for a local shelter and most of them are only familiar with clay litter. For my own cats I use Feline Pine so odors aren’t a problem, but using the clay litter for the kittens makes my house smell like a stinky old drain. I would love to eliminate that!
Interesting concept but when I went to see about ordering one, see that they don’t ship to California. And why is that?
I just ordered one, cannot wait to get it. I hope it is everything that you say it is. I will comment later once I get a chance to use it.
What about the smell it makes when plugged in? Is it overwhelming in your opinion?
you have my attention. only question is should i order 1 to start with or go ahead and order 2.
Many CritterZone customers tell us that they find 2 units serve their environments – for coverage in the litterbox area we recommend a wall plug in unit and where ever else it is needed to control odor and allergy issues the 10-ft corded unit is very versatile.
Thanks for sharing! I just ordered one and can’t wait to get it!
@Ron – good question! It isn’t very loud at all, but it’s not completely silent, there’s a soft sound from a small fan inside, white noise.
@Amber Get two! I want one in every room!
@Yvette – The unit doesn’t seem to emit a smell, the resulting scent in the room from whatever it’s doing is like fresh air with a little bit of an ozone smell, I’d say.
@Shannon – looking forward to hearing what you think of it!
@Taca – let me see what I can find out about shipping to California.
These sound amazing! And I’ll be looking forward to hearing about shipping to CA.
Sounds worth a try- and the website took my order to Santee, CA. 😉
It covers 800 sq. ft.
So, if i have an 800 sq. ft. home, does this means you can plug it in in one room and have it clean the air in all the rooms? Or do you need multiple units because of all the walls?
Does the one that plugs into an outlet work as well as the one with the cord?
This sounds awesome and just what I’ve been looking for. My only question is how do your kitties feel about it? The reason I ask is because I have an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner that freaks my kitties out. I’m sure it’s because they are more sensitive to the electrical impulses. I’m wondering if this would have the same effect.
@Wendy – so far they don’t seem to notice it at all. They will even sit on the shelf next to it.
Just checked for these units on Amazon and they are the same price, so ordering direct makes sense with the $10 discount. Find the 30 day guarantee reassuring, and hope this isn’t just another gimmick for us desperate pet owners. Putting my trust in Hauspanther and ordering one…will let you know if it tests out successful.
My first one is ordered and I’ll start saving for a back of the house unit if it works up front. With nine mostly elderly (read: incontinent, barfing, ibd diarrhea-producing) animals sharing my 1400 square feet, it’s ALL about cleaning and odor control. I have given up on air purifiers because of the cost of filters, especially in a furry environment. Can’t wait for my unit to arrive!
How big (what are the dimensions) and how heavy is the unit? How do you order one? I don’t see an buy button?
LOL nevermind…. found those details on AMAZON but I still don’t know how to buy it direct to get discount.
and I found it….. wow that was not easy….. revamp each page to have a BIG BUY NOW button. 🙂
Thanks for the review. Ordered one. Can’t wait to try it.
How big is one of these? I couldn’t find any dimensions on the website and I need to measure to see if it will fit in a small area or if I need to get the one with the cord. It sounds fantastic and I would like to get one for each floor, since my house is small. Thanks!
I am interested! But does this purifier produce ozone like many of the other non-pet-centric units on the market? I would love to have something like this to manage cat odors in my small apartment, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to figure out from the company’s specs whether it will irritate my lungs.
Tried to order one but the “promotional code” is invalid. 🙁
@Janet – try cutting and pasting, you might have a typo HAUSPANTHER
Wow, I sure hope these are as good as they sound. There’s a 30-day return policy, so I’m thinking about trying a couple. With 12 cats and 1 dog in the house, and HAUSPANTHER’S glowing recommendation, I’m willing to give them a try. Tell me, though, Kate, from your experience with these, do they help at all with lessening litterbox dust? I really don’t see much reference to dust control in the product info on their website.
A couple of the reviewers on Amazon complain about an “odor” that comes from the machine. Is this something that you have noticed?
Great timing, I need a new air purifier as of last month and have been spending a ton of time looking at brands, reading reviews, getting shocked at the prices-basically driving myself insane. This sounds like exactly what I need, the price is right, and I trust your opinion & experience when it comes to pet products. Thank you and I will let you know how good it works for us in a follow up comment. Thank you again-and everyone else who posed good questions.
I did a copy/paste and am getting invalid code also. I am doing this with my phone. Could that by the issue?
Thank you so much for this. I have 4 aircleaners in my small townhouse. I have to vacuum the pre-filters and replace the main filters. And my electric bill is through the roof. I ordered 2 of these to try. Do you know how long they are offering the discount? I may need 2 more.
What about the shipping to California thing? That’s kind of a red flag to me considering Cali has more stringent environmental regulations than the rest of the country.
I had the same concern! If this is one of those purifiers that uses ozone, that could be why. Ozone is horrible for you — anyone with asthma or other breathing problems should avoid it. But, long term exposure caused lung damage even in those who don’t have problems. Here’s what the EPA has to say: http://www.epa.gov/glo/health.html.
Hi Lisa and DanielT,
The response to our product has been overwhelmingly positive, but it looks like there may be some questions about how it works, etc.
First understand that there is some fantastic science going on here. That’s what makes the product work so well! The CritterZone isn’t an ozone generator OR an ionizer. It’s simply reactivating indoor air by creating a myriad of active ingredients that give the air the ability to clean itself, just like outdoor air does. Those active ingredients start creating chemical reactions immediately and start breaking down contaminants. Depending on the area and the situation, those reactions can give off different odors as the air works to purify itself. Some of those reactions will of course include oxygen being converted to a faint amount of ozone. Enough to smell but waaaaay less than what NATURALLY occurs outside. We are talking 1/1000th!
Science and Mother Nature are AMAZING things and can be hard to explain. We hope that we have done that for you a little here, but if you have any questions you can always reach us through our website. http://www.critterzoneusa.com.
@Sharon, yes placing the order on the phone might be the issue.
@Ron, regarding any scent coming out of the unit, the scent can come and go, as I was told in the demo, depending on the composition of the air in the room. When I do notice a scent, I find it to be like the smell of fresh air, no perfumes or anything like that, it’s also not plastic-y or synthetic, as far as I can tell.
Thanks for all the kind replies.
Any more information on why they do not ship to CA? I would love to try one, but they will not ship to me. It does seem to be a red flag.
Just plugged mine in. Sure smells like Ozone.
Yep … need to read how this differs from ozone air fresheners because it seems to be having the same effect on me. Guess I should have read that before I ordered. The good news: I can’t smell the litterbox. The bad news: my eyes sting and my chest feels tight. Maybe I’ll just turn it on when I’m expecting company.
When will the discount code expire? I’d like to use it within a week or so but can’t right now. Thanks!

If this is indeed an ozone generator being sold as an air purifier, I wouldn’t use this anywhere near me, much less my cats.
I hope hauspanther does a bit more research into this product before recommending.
Hi, Ron:
Thanks for bringing this question to my attention. I took your comment directly to the owner of the company. Here is the response:
https://www.hauspanther.com/2013/03/21/more-information-about-the-critterzone-air-purifier/
I ordered one. It does have a slight noise..but it is not annoying. It also has a slight smell..kinda like burnt dust. I have it in my living room..I think it is working, but then again, my living room doesnt stink. I want to get more where I place my litter boxes. With the discount, is it $10 off each unit or $10 off an order?
just got my unit today & it is very very quiet. from all i read about this product it seems like it will be a very welcome
addition to my household of many rescue animals. a friend of mine just got hers too & we are both hoping for the
excellent results that Hauspanther raved about. others i know are planning to order based on our experience.
I guess I’m wondering how this is different from the Ozone machines. His bio said he created the Alpine machines. I figured this has got to be in the family. Just wondering how it’s different?
I really want one, but now I am worried about the Ozone levels it creates!
Is there any technical info about its outputs? I can’t find anything on the website?
Here’s some more info: https://www.hauspanther.com/2013/03/21/more-information-about-the-critterzone-air-purifier/
I’ve been running this for the past few days – I put it in a bedroom where I have a foster cat and could close the door. While the odor of a dirty litter box is gone (I let it go 2 days on purpose), the ozone smell is highly disturbing. Not only by the end of 2 days did it have me having a stuffed up head and tightness in my chest, my foster cat who is recently over a upper resp. had the same problem. My unit is going back.
Amy, please read our update post with more info about the CritterZone. I’m sure the company will be happy to give you a refund, they have been great to work with.

I ordered one after I read this. It makes NO sound at all and I aren’t noticed any change in odor. Wondering if I received a faulty unit. Seriously- 100% silent when plugged in. I just wrote to CritterZone. Hopefully swapping it out will be an easy process…
Just purchased one to try out and the HAUSPANTHER coupon worked like a charm, thank you! 🙂
