This is a very interesting concept that could solve a common problem for cat owners. It’s the KnobLock, a simple little device designed to keep cats from opening lever-style door knobs. The foam piece slides over the lever, preventing the cat from pulling on it and opening the door. It looks like it can also be used to prop a door open by attaching it to the edge of the door. I haven’t tried one myself, so I’m not sure how well it works, but cat-proofing lever door knobs is something that I’ve had readers ask about and this could do the trick.
KnobLock was designed by the Japanese pet product design firm Oppo and is available from Rakuten Global Market but it looks like you’ll need to use a forwarding service for international delivery.
We had lever door handles at our previous residence; this one has knobs. These are clever and may well help foil the cat who gets into everything!
What an ingenious idea. I have lever door handles throughout my house – except for the entry door. The problem is that one of my cats jumps up and pulls the handle and then on the way down pushes on the door to see if it will open. He does this constantly until the door opens – usually 2-4 tries. I have to lock him in the bedroom with me so that he doesn’t go about and open the doors and let the dogs run willy-nilly through the house at night! I tried a bunji cord but he just kept jumping up and pulling on the handle even though he could not get the door open. It was really noisy, bothersome and I could not sleep. I don’t want to kennel him all night because then he cries! I think I might run into the same situation with the KnobLock but I would certainly be willing to give it a try. Strange too, but wonderful, that none of the other cats have learned this trick even though they watch him.
Hi Sandy try attaching several lengths of very wide packing tape temporarily on the door with the sticky side out so that when your puss jumps up he feels the adhesive side on his paws. This worked for a furniture scratching puss i had and it just might work for your door opening puss.
Tried this, it worked for a day… then she went back to it…. Compressed air, nope, turning it upside down, NOPE… Tin foil… NOPE… She has actually BROKEN the doors when we keep them locked…. Thinking about just replacing them to round knobs.
i used to have a cat that opened the lever doors when i was working overseas. i lived with two other women and kept him in my room at night so he wouldn’t bother anyone. i hung a long shawl (actually a sari) over the door and let a good bit of it cover the handle to the door. seems if he couldn’t see it, he didn’t bother it, and the shawl being thin didn’t hamper the door closing.
I don’t have that type of door handles, maybe will need this when I move. I’m wondering if there is something to keep cats out of kitchen cabinets. I go into the kitchen and find the 2 doors by the sink have been opened by one of my cats. The other one is starting to do this also.
Lynda, if you have knobs on the cabinets that you can wrap something around, and the offending cabinets open facing each other, Velcro cable ties are good at holding doors like that shut.
How did you know we needed one of these?? LOL
we actually think it’s cute and very clever of Jayhawk to release himself from captivity!
I needed this 10 years ago! I had a cat who would let my dog out of our apartment.
I can not believe all the incredible creations you make for our kitties,! this door knob is just right what my cat needs, I can see that cats are all the same all over the world!!!!! 🙂
Our cat opens these lever knobbed doors throughout our house. We initially tried barricading ourselves in at night, but that clearly isn’t safe and he’d still manage to release the latch and push the door open just enough to squeeze in. Our current remedy is wrapping the levers with aluminium foil; the cat can’t stand the feeling of it. It works surprisingly well, but is unsightly. This is a much more aesthetically pleasing alternative!
We had to replace 4 of our lever type door handles with round knobs to stop one of our cats opening the doors. At night we would wedge a shoe under the door to stop him coming into our bedroom – it was funny at first but got pretty annoying!
Here’s hoping this works – I have a cat that can open my lever doors (locking him in my room doesn’t work as he can also pull the doors open). I suspect converting to door knobs wouldn’t be much better, as he can unscrew all of the bathtub drains as well.
Anyone tried these for an extended period? I had a different kind of lock and it resulted in the cat simply breaking the handle. She opens doors by jumping and hanging on the lever – a truck she learned I knobs! I have resorted to locking doors from the inside, but closets don’t have locks and I keep losing the goody little interior door keys
