Introducing the Hatch Pet Carrier, a brand new carrier loaded with innovative features. This sleek design isn’t just another pretty carrier, it actually addresses some big issues with pet travel. I’m pretty excited about this design!
With regular pet carriers, if you try to open them up to pet your cat and provide comfort, there’s a pretty good chance that a stressed cat may try to escape. Regular carriers don’t allow for easy and safe access when traveling.
The Hatch carrier addresses this issue with a special patented Direct Reach no-escape feature. Simply turn the knob on the side of the carrier to open the access hatch. This creates an opening big enough for you to slide your hand inside the carrier to give your cat a pet, but not allowing the cat to escape.
The unique combination of materials and design allows you to comfort your cat anywhere without the worry of escape.
The team behind the Hatch carrier includes Jon Mirsky, the inventor of the hatch concept, and Anjali Kalyani, a business strategist with experience in product launch, both cat owners themselves who were seeking a better alternative for transporting cats. Jed Crystal, the industrial design wizard behind the Hepper cat product line, is the one who gave the Hatch carrier it’s final form and finishing touches, creating a beautiful and functional product.
The special access port is just one of many impressive features of the Hatch carrier. Others include:
- Custom molded EVA base
- Custom padded shoulder strap
- Removable and machine washable interior pet bed
- Entire front panel and both ends open for easy pet loading
- Large zipper pockets on both sides
- Ballistic nylon exterior
- Large open air mesh windows on side and ends for excellent ventilation
- Seat belt straps for safe car rides
- Roll-aboard luggage handle strap
- Packs flat for easy packing and storage
The Hatch carrier measures 13″ high by 19″ long and 11″ wide and is recommended for pets up to 15 lbs. The top can be compressed to 11″ high when needed to fit in smaller spaces.

The Hatch carrier is ready to go to production and they are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to launch. You can score some nice savings on the new Hatch carrier and be one of the first to get your hands on this innovative new product! Let’s help make this new concept a reality!
Does it have a shoulder strap?
Yes, it has a padded shoulder strap and a carry handle.
Beautiful, versatile, and safe — what more could one ask, except that it be made in sizes to accomodate, ah, more generously-proportioned felines? 😉
Looks well made and elegant. Will there be a choice of colors? And sizes? Well padded shoulder straps are key. Carry handle looks very comfortable. I like the shape – just enough space for kitty to be comfortable and cozy, yet not slide around. And netting so kitty can see out is good. I liked a previous carrier I had that allowed for a cover to go down across netting when need to keep out the wind. Thanks.
I’m very interested, but I wonder if there is a chance that it might not launch, would I loose my investment?
Thanks.
It’s a very beautiful bag and seems to have great functions. For my large cats though the shoulder carriers aren’t feasible, we use backpack bags like the pet gear or snoozie. I think this would be great for smaller cats that will be traveling in public, like the city.
Great question! The way Kickstarter works, though, is “all or nothing”. This means that if our Hatch project doesn’t reach its goal of $35,000, we don’t get anything – your card is never charged. If our project is successfully funded, your card will be charged only when the project reaches its funding deadline around 12/13. We will tell you, though, we really intend to make our goal and are excited to deliver the best carrier on the market ever!
Kate,
Thank you for the beautiful post covering our carrier.
We definitely hope to offer a larger carrier in the future – the inspiration for my patented invention was a cat named Junior, who tipped the scales at just about 16 pounds. So at Hatch, we also love the “more generously-proportioned felines.”
We do hope to add stretch goals to our kickstarter that will allow us to offer color choices. Please help us spread the word about the Hatch Pet Carrier so we can reach these higher funding levels!
Thank you all for your comments and your interest in our product!
Love the idea, but I notice nowhere in your promo material do you mention airline travel and carry-on dimensions. Is it carry-on friendly?
@Michael. Thanks for the question. Yes, we wanted our first carrier to be carry-on friendly, so we designed it to to be as large as possible while still meeting the carry-on requirements of most major airlines. I’ve traveled with a prototype on Delta, American and United with no problems!
