Here’s a new cat carrier design from K-Kat, the folks who brought you It’s THE Scoop wire litter scoop (which I LOVE!) Their new MagiCarrier offers a totally new way to get cats in and out of a carrier that’s much less stressful for both you and your cat.
This new carrier has a unique slide-out drawer that allows you to place your cat inside and simply slide the drawer closed, no more shoving kitty through a small opening and fumbling with the door latch.
K-Kat just launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund the production of the new MagiCarrier and you can score some nice savings by supporting the project. Visit their Indiegogo campaign page to get all the details.
We’d also love to hear what you think of this concept. Please leave a comment on this post to let us know your thoughts!
I think my cat would like lounging this carrier even when a trip is not on the calendar.
This cat carrier looks very handy. Getting my cat out of the carrier at the vet’s is usually a problem. With this carrier I can just slide them out….ideal!
I THINK IT’S A GREAT IDEA BUT I NEED SOMETHING WITH WHEELS BECAUSE I CANNOT CARRY FOR A LENGTH OF TIME.
I can see a lot of advantages with this carrier. I work with quite a few feral and semi-feral cats and this would enable you to slide the drawer open just enough to get your had and a towel in there to “towel” them before they could get away! Awesome idea!
Wonderful design!! I’d buy one in a second!
This is ingenious!
This is GENIUS!!!!
This is a fantastic idea. It’s basically a “cat trap” (i.e. cardboard box, newspaper, taped off square on the floor ☺️) to which any cat will be naturally drawn. Thank you genius’ at K-Kat!
What a BRILLIANT concept. Hoping those so fortunate will help this project to get off the ground (no pun intended).
This looks like a huge improvement from the typical plastic cat carrier design, especially for trips to the vet. When I worked as a vet tech, I remember extracting cats from their carriers as a difficult and traumatizing experience (for both the tech and the cat), and we would usually have to disassemble an entire carrier just to get the cat out. This also looks way easier to clean than a regular carrier. Very nice concept!
That is such a great idea instead of having to take the carrier apart to get the cat out.
I think your cat would have to be comatose to lie still while drawer is being closed. Cats are very quick to try and escape if they want to be .I can`t picture any of my 4 cats going in peacefully….
exactly what I thought, and no advantage at the vet, because the cat will move back into the carrier. I’m afraid I would have to knock’m down first go get them in. (I have 7 cats)
Sorry it’s not clear in the picture, but there is a panel at the back of the drawer that extends to the top of the carrier, so when the vet slides the drawer out, the cat cannot hide back inside.
I agree. I’d never get my cat to be still while I closed the drawer. She end up with her head sticking out.
I’m like you Barbara. None of my cats would get in a drawer that closes over them.
Brilliant! Would buy it today!
For my cat the problem isn’t the shape of the opening, it is being enclosed at all. She doesn’t like bags, boxes or closed rooms. I can’t imagine how I would keep her in the carrier as I closed it. It looks like a great idea in general but I don’t think it would help me transport my current cat.
What a great idea and it appears one can use the traditional door for security when traveling. The slide out feature make Vet visits much easier as the Vets can examine the pet right in the carrier. I love it! Hope it’s not too heavy…
I want one now!!!! Just adopted a feral cat and her kitten. Took her to the vet for spaying and it took me a half hour to get her into the carrier. Hope it is for sale soon.
I think this is a wonderful idea, and I have already ordered two carriers on the Indigogo fundraiser page! These people know their cats! I came across their litter scoop a year or so ago, and it is the best scoop I have ever used. It is sturdy and holds up to heavy use. And it makes scooping so much quicker! I have since sent several scoops to friends who are in cat rescue, and they have liked them as well. I can’t wait to get my cat carriers! I think this is going to be so much easier and less traumatic for the cats and for the humans!
I went to look at it so I could learn what all those numbered arrows mean. What did I find? A bunch of videos!
For now, I decided not to contibute. It looked like an erect cat versus a crouching cat, so I can’t figure out the difference.
Sorry about that! That is actually a picture from our US Patent, so those numbers are there to define our patent claims. The patent protects the “destabilizing floor” which acts on a cat’s natural tendency to crouch down and maintain their balance when the flooring beneath them is moved.
I too need something with wheels or optional wheels. I cannot take my cats to the vet without help because I can’t carry them. This carrier with wheels like a suit case would be great.
Thank you for sharing! We have been hearing that a lot, and will be considering that as we improve and expand on the first model!
Absolutely brilliant!!
Great design. Don’t know if it would work on my cats, though. A carrier no matter how my cats get put in it don’t like anything associated with a vet visit.
This would have to make the trips to the vet soooo much easier.
Looks like you’ve designed a better “cat trap”.
wow!!!!! this is a fantastic idea!
Terrific idea!
What is the approximate weight?
Thank you! It will weigh about 5 pounds.
i do not think this is a ‘better’ idea at all. If the cat does not want to go into the cage, the ‘drawer’ is not going to help at all. Period.
Brilliant idea. Which I had thought of it.
How secure is it? When I pick it up will it fall apart?
What is weight limit?
I have a 22 pound cat that I would be afraid as soon as I pick it up, it would snap apart!
It will be stronger than most medium-sized hard-shell carriers, with reinforced sidewalls and bottom shell, and metal bolts holding it together. We don’t have an exact weight limit, but just now I put our 19-pounder into the prototype along with 4 pounds of canned goods, and it easily held the weight!
hope you get this going would love to see them in australia….
When you pull the drawer out, how high is the back panel? A freaked out cat will make use of the smallest gap to squeeze behind the drawer and then you would be stuck.
Also the drawer would have to slide very easily – plastic on plastic can stick and the pushing movement, especially if you add some stucking and jerking, would freak out even a calm kitty and they would be long gone.
It would work well with a cooperative calm cat, but a nervous nellie would do better with a top load carrier, IMHO.
The back panel goes all the way up to the top, so the cat cannot squeeze behind it. Also, it will have raised runners under the drawer to reduce friction and make it slide smoothly.
I never have a problem getting the cat in the carrier – it is keeping them in there while I close the door that is the problem. This carrier won’t solve that. On the other hand it makes it easier to get the cat out at the vet. But without that top door to get them in I will have to pass.
Brilliant! Best idea for a cat carrier yet!
LOVE THIS
ITS A LOT NICER
THEN TRYING TO GET THE CAT
IN THE CAGE….
SO HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST. ..
Thank you! Pre-order deals start at $63 for one and go down to $49 each for multi-pack orders, plus shipping. Check out the campaign page for more details.
Hi Guys….we have to evacuate during storm season, and we often need to travel for several hours …..I would love a carrier that would have a concealed litter tray under the sitting level……similar to what you now….but the whole carrier expands forward doubling its length when expanded. exposing the litter area below..when we are in the car……then we can then slid the unit closed when we need to carry her upon arrival…. this is a dream carrier/litter tray travel carrier all traveling cat lovers would love………sign me up if you ever build one………
On the surface a good idea but it looks to me like you need 2 hands to push the tray in easily and that leaves the cat with no restraint. My guess is that most cats are not going to lie down like the cat in the picture. The very best carriers load from the top and also have a front door. Easy to lower the cat down into the carrier with both hands, then keep one hand on the cat, the other hand closes the top and latches it. The front door is nice for the cat to come out of the carrier when it’s time to come out. PetMate Double Door Deluxe is what I use for my four cats and any fosters I have with me. I wouldn’t buy this new style carrier and expect to successfully load a cat.
Love the design.
I think it needs a door on the back or on the top.
No plastic carrier has yet proved strong enough to withstand the attacks of Oliver – he now travels to the vets in a large metal cage (originally the transportation carrier of my Border Collies before they died). Daisy now travels in the plastic cage.
A animal transportation cage with a tray underneath for urine would be appreciated.
I don’t see any of my personal or feral cats lying down and letting me close the slide in door without trying to jump out. Where I think this would work really well is with transporting orphan kittens or possibly very social, young kittens. It could actually double as a bed for bottle feeding baby kittens or small pups.
OMG, this is the answer to my dreams! I hope to be able to buy a couple of these before I retire, when I plan to move from He!!Annoy to Southern Indiana (with my two semi-feral cats … they are dream girls in the house, but show them a carrier and all holy heck breaks loose!)
This is one of those “why didn’t I think of that” ideas. Really cool!
Well, I don’t shove mine through a little hole when it’s time to go to the vet’s. I’ve taught them that carriers are nice places to eat in and to hang out. I leave them on the floor where they live, and I feed them in carriers (have to isolate some with special foods). When it’s vet time, I just put the cat in front of the carrier, and in he goes. No problems. Still goes in happily later that night to be fed.
But, it’s a cool idea.
Having a few carriers like this one would have made my job at the local shelter SO much easier. As others have mentioned, there really is no good way to get a terrified or semi-feral cat in or out of a traditional carrier (even those with a top-load design). This design is perfect for cats and humans. I no longer work at the shelter, but I’d love to donate at least one of these.
The design is really unique. My concern would be getting the base to slide in quickly, quietly and no jerky movements because sans that I can guarantee you that every cat I’ve ever met would not sit still while I tried to close it. Having rollers on it such as you find on kitchen drawers might allow for quick, silent and smooth closing. Just a thought.
In response to Melissa’s response, I have never found a top-load carrier that allows for quick entry.
I would like to see someone make a clam shell carrier. although this carrier has possibility.
Where can I purchase one ( or two ! ) ?
My vet told me about these. Where do I buy??
