Three lucky readers are each going to win a rainbow of five 4 lb bags of NEON Clumping Silica Cat Litter! And this colorful cat litter isn’t just a gimmick, it really works!
I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first saw the NEON litter. I thought it was just a fad, but then I spent some time talking with the folks at Ultra Pet, the manufacturer of NEON litter, and I gave it a try with my cats. I’m happy to report that this is an excellent litter and the color is not just fun, it serves a purpose. Let me tell you more…
NEON litter is made of silica gel crystals, a completely non-toxic, extremely absorbent material. It is a form of silicon dioxide made from naturally occurring sodium silicate. Do not confuse silica gel crystals with crystalline silica (found in clay litters), which is a known carcinogen when inhaled. I had always confused the two, thinking that silica cat litters may not be safe for cats, but I was wrong.
Silica gel is commonly used as a desiccant, you know the little packets of pellets that you find in food or other products in order to control excess moisture. That is exactly what it does in the litter box — it absorbs moisture, keeping the box odor free.
Ultra Pet was the first company to introduce silica gel cat litter to the US market with their Litter Pearls brand. The litter was designed to absorb moisture while you scooped solids, eventually requiring you to dump and change the silica gel once it was saturated. Ultra Pet took silica gel cat litter one step further when they added a clumping agent. The new clumping silica gel litter traps liquids in rock-hard clumps, allowing you to scoop both solids and liquids while the silica gel absorbs any excess moisture, resulting in an ultra-clean and odor-free box that you don’t have to completely dump out and replace.
So why add the color? First of all, it’s fun and you can even make litter box art (like sand art!), although your design probably won’t last long since cats love to dig in a clean litter box. The functional reason to add the color is that silica gel is white, and when it absorbs urine it can start to turn yellow. This happens long before it actually starts to smell, but the visual cue might make you think it smells even though it doesn’t. It’s a masking effect, plus the vegetable dyes used, as well as the clumping agent (guar gum), are both non-toxic and food grade.
One of my other favorite features of the NEON Clumping Silica Cat Litter is that it is truly almost completely dust free!

I am now addicted to Neon Cat Litter for my 4 cats and the cleanest house I have ever had with totally worry free litter located in the kitchen area. Now PetSmart my supplier has stopped carrying it in Canada and I am hooped.
The Litter Pearls Ultra Clump is the same but without the color. Maybe that is more readily available? Here is the link on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2BojrOH
