If you missed Jackson Galaxy’s Cat Camp @home yesterday, don’t despair! You can watch the whole thing on YouTube, including my fun DIY tutorial where I teach you how to make this cat scratcher lounge using simple materials that you can easily get your hands on.
If you’d like to make your own scratcher lounge, here are the supplies you’ll need:
- 2 pieces of heavy cardboard cut to 19″ x 19″ each (I recycled an old cardboard box)
- 1 piece of sisal rug remnant cut to 15″ x 15″. You can purchase sisal pieces by the foot, like these sisal remnants on Amazon, or you can buy them by the pound on eBay.
- 4 cardboard mailing tubes, 2″ diameter, 16″ long, like these mailing tubes on Amazon.
- 100 feet of sisal or jute rope, 1/2″ thick, I used this jute rope available on Amazon.
- Glue gun
- Glue sticks
- Masking tape
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Pen or pencil
Watch the whole day of Cat Camp activities on YouTube with my Arts & Crafts segment starting around 1:03 and another fun art project, “The Joy of Painting Your Cat” with Megan Lynn Kott at 2:46.
As I say in the video, there are lots of variations on this project. You can use a different material or size for the base and you can use different size tubes and rope, you’ll just need to adjust the dimensions accordingly. The fun thing about using the tubes for this project is that it creates hiding places for small toys, making it a fun activity center, too!
If you make one please share on social media and tag @hauspanther, or submit photos here. I can’t wait to see what you make!

I LOVED being able to “go to” Cat Camp for the first time because it was virtual! And I love this scratcher lounge. I can see it being integrated into an activity center, too. If I still had access to all of the tools, I’d make one. Thanks for the wonderful idea and instructions!
Awesome! I’ve been searching for a scratching post, but this idea is even better. Thank you for sharing!
